Member’s Weaving Experiences

  • Cynthia Hull, a resident of Reston, describes her experience after 30 years as a weaver: "Knitting, weaving and spinning are all very relaxing and very sensual. You find yourself measuring the warp, holding the fabric and touching it again and again. You get into a rhythm when you work." Cynthia takes delight in fashioning novel items for the table, including linen napkins and hand towels that boast original intricate designs. She also weaves incredibly luscious scarves from velvety, smooth yarns dyed in jewel tones befitting of royalty.

  • Guild members come to meetings from as far away as Norfolk. Conant Emmons, a Frederick, Maryland, resident, is the Guild's eldest member, at 96. He creates unparalleled wall hangings, which have been on display most recently at the Loudoun County Museum in Leesburg. According to some, his most notable work is a tapestry depicting television host David Letterman's face. Conant began weaving over 35 years ago, having built his own loom modeled after the Williamsburg loom. "The Waterford Weavers Guild leads the way for others," says Conant. "They are a very dedicated and sincere group of people." He now creates rag rugs and sells his art at the Rose Hill Manor Park & Children's Museum gift shop in Frederick.

  • Joan Hutton, a Fairfax resident and Guild member for over 10 years, designs unique woolen felted hats of all shapes and sizes. Her hats are warm, functional and dazzling. Always changing direction in her craft, Joan likes to call herself the "Attention Deficit Crafter." She enjoys sharing her knowledge with children and is particularly fond of giving spinning, weaving and dyeing demonstrations. "The other weavers have been an inspiration to me!" she says. "We are an active and educational group".
